First Quantum Computer
The world's first commercial quantum computer, made by the Canadian company D-Wave Systems Inc., performed no better than a classical computer in a recent analysis.
Quantum computers are thought to be able to solve complex problems thousands of times faster than classical computers, and scientists have been working on developing them for more than a decade. These devices could be useful for modeling quantum mechanics — the realm of physics that describes how matter at the sub-microscopic scale can exist as both a particle and a wave — or for cracking encrypted online information.
A team of researchers compared the performance of a D-Wave Two device to that of a classical computer on a specific set of problems, and failed to find evidence that the quantum computer was faster. [10 Technologies That Will Transform Your Life]
"We do not see any evidence of quantum speedup in the D-Wave device," said Matthias Troyer, a theoretical physicist at ETH Zurich, in Switzerland, and co-author of the study, detailed today (June 19) in the journal Science.
Quantum machines
Classical computers perform calculations using bits, whose value can only be 0 or 1. Quantum computers instead use quantum bits, or "qubits," that can exist as a 0 and 1 at the same time. This allows quantum devices to perform multiple calculations at once.
Theoretical physicist Richard Feynman was one of the first to propose the idea of quantum computers in the 1980s, as a way to overcome the limitations of classical computers in simulating quantum systems in physics. Later, mathematician Peter Shor showed that a quantum computer could factor an integer into prime numbers, an ability that could be used to crack encryption algorithms on the Internet.
The company D-Wave, based in Burnaby, Canada, built what it called the first commercial quantum computer in 2011. In 2013, Google and NASA bought one of the company's second-generation devices to use for artificial intelligence research.
Yet, some scientists remain skeptical that the D-Wave devices operate faster than a traditional computer.
Troyer and his colleagues set out to test the 503-qubit D-Wave Two device. They posed a thousand random optimization problems to the machine, and measured how long it took to solve them, compared with a classical PC.
For the problems they tested, the researchers found no evidence of "quantum speedup," or faster performance, on the D-Wave Two.
Quantum pessimism
There could be several explanations for these results, the researchers said. Perhaps, the scientists simply didn't test the machine on the right set of problems.
Colin Williams, a quantum computer scientist and D-Wave's director of business development, told Science Magazine that the problems used in the study were "not at all the right choice for probing a quantum speedup."
Or, it could be that the D-Wave's qubits are not ideal — the device uses qubit technology that is a decade old, so the bits may only stay in position for about 10 nanoseconds (10 billionths of a second), even though it takes 20 microseconds (2,000 times as long) to solve a problem, Troyer said. Another possibility is that the D-Wave may not have been calibrated correctly, he said.
So far, no one has found cases where the D-Wave shows quantum speedup, Troyer said. "The more we look and we don't find it, the more pessimistic I become," he said.

A Brain-Inspired Chip Takes to the Sky
An experiment involving a chip on a small drone shows how hardware modeled on the brain could provide useful intelligence.
There isn’t much space between your ears, but what’s in there can do many things that a computer of the same size never could. Your brain is also vastly more energy efficient at interpreting the world visually or understanding speech than any computer system.
That’s why academic and corporate labs have been experimenting with “neuromorphic” chips modeled on features seen in brains. These chips have networks of “neurons” that communicate in spikes of electricity (see “Thinking in Silicon”). They can be significantly more energy-efficient than conventional chips, and some can even automatically reprogram themselves to learn new skills.
Now a neuromorphic chip has been untethered from the lab bench, and tested in a tiny drone aircraft that weighs less than 100 grams.
In the experiment, the prototype chip, with 576 silicon neurons, took in data from the aircraft’s optical, ultrasound, and infrared sensors as it flew between three different rooms.
The first time the drone was flown into each room, the unique pattern of incoming sensor data from the walls, furniture, and other objects caused a pattern of electrical activity in the neurons that the chip had never experienced before. That triggered it to report that it was in a new space, and also caused the ways its neurons connected to one another to change, in a crude mimic of learning in a real brain. Those changes meant that next time the craft entered the same room, it recognized it and signaled as such.
The chip involved is far from ready for practical deployment, but the test offers empirical support for the ideas that have motivated research into neuromorphic chips, says Narayan Srinivasa, who leads HRL’s Center for Neural and Emergent Systems. “This shows it is possible to do learning literally on the fly, while under very strict size, weight, and power constraints,” he says.
The drone, custom built for the test by drone-maker company Aerovironment, based in Monrovia, California, is six inches square, 1.5 inches high, and weighs only 93 grams, including the battery. HRL’s chip made up just 18 grams of the craft’s weight, and used only 50 milliwatts of power. That wouldn’t be nearly enough for a conventional computer to run software that could learn to recognize rooms, says Srinivasa.
The flight test was a challenge set by the Pentagon research agency DARPA as part of a project under which it has funded HRL, IBM, and others to work on neuromorphic chips. One motivation is the hope that neuromorphic chips might make it possible for military drones to make sense of video and sensor data for themselves, instead of always having to beam it down to earth for analysis by computers or humans.
Prototypes made under DARPA’s program—like HRL’s—have delivered promising results, but much work remains before such technology can perform useful work, says Vishal Saxena, an assistant professor working on neuromorphic chips at Boise State University. “The biggest challenge is identifying what the applications will be and developing robust algorithms,” he says.
Researchers also face a chicken-and-egg scenario, with chips being developed without much idea of what algorithms they will run and algorithms being written without a firm idea of what chip designs will become established. At the same time, neuroscientists are still discovering new things about how networks of real brain cells work on information. “There’s a lot of work to be done collectively between circuit and algorithm experts and the neuroscience community,” says Saxena.
Still, HRL’s owners, GM and Boeing, are already considering how they might commercialize the technology, says Srinivasa. One option could be to use neuromorphic chips to build a degree of intelligence into the sensors increasingly found in cars, planes, and other systems.

Football-Sized Underwater Robot
Sampriti Bhattacharyya, a graduate student in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology along with her advisor Professor Harry Asada has developed a football-sized underwater robot that can inspect the bottom of ships for concealed contraband with help of ultrasound scan. The robot initially developed to inspect for cracks in nuclear reactors and water tanks has been modified to inspect ships for false hulls and propeller shafts, places where smugglers are likely to hide their contraband. The team presented the working prototype at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems and proposed an idea of a swarm of robots which would hide in water and inspect multiple ships arriving at a port.
Considering the unusual design, the team used 3D printers to construct the structural components of the robot. The half with the flattened panel has been made waterproof to protect the electrical components such as circuits, a rechargeable battery, a communications antenna, and an inertial measurement unit that consists of three accelerometers and three gyroscopes. The other half is a permeable one and houses the propulsion system of the robot. The propulsion system of the robot consists of six pumps that expel water through rubber tubes. The water-based propulsion system is noteworthy because unlike conventional propulsion systems such as propellers, the system aboard this robot does not leave visible bubble trails as it moves underwater. Since no part of the propulsion system is outside the main structure it can be hid under clumps of algae without the fear of any tangling. Both of the aforementioned characteristics help the robot to inspect the ships without being spotted.
While inspecting the hull of ship or a boat, two of the six pumps vent towards the opposite side of the flattened panel to press it against the surface which it is inspecting. The remaining pumps vent water in tubes to control the movement of the robot. The team admits that the elliptical shape makes the robot quite unstable but on the other hand it facilitates quick manoeuvres. The robot has been programmed with a control algorithm that receives signals from the on-board motion sensors and corrects the direction and speed depending on the environment.
In its prototype stage the robot is powered by a lithium battery that lasts for 40 minutes on a single charge. In later stages, the team is planning to put in a bigger battery that would last for a hundred hours and can be charged wirelessly. The team is still working out the rough edges with the ultrasound scanning which requires the robot to be at a specific distance from the hull as ultrasound requires the emitter to be in direct contact with the surface or at a distance which is multiple of the wavelength of sound. The team is expecting the robot to be priced at around $600 when it makes its way into the consumer market.

An Ant-Sized Wireless Radio That Operates Without Battery
In order to make any electronic device smarter we need Internet. This idea gave way to the concept of “Internet of Things” which can be defined as interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing-like devices within the existing Internet infrastructure. In other words every device must be capable of receiving and transmitting information to other devices. They only problem with adding a wireless radio to any device is that it increases the bulk as well as power consumption of a device. Keeping these problems in mind, a Stanford electrical engineering team collaborated with researchers from the University of California to develop a wireless radio antenna that is the size of an ant and operates without any battery. Even with a battery the wireless chip is quite frugal, the team says that a single AAA battery can power it for a hundred years. The wireless chip is powered by the electromagnetic waves that are used to communicate with it. The team highlights another aspect of this wireless radio, which is cost. They say that the chip costs pennies to fabricate and makes it cheap enough to be installed on any gadget.
In 2011, Professor Ali Niknejad, director of the Wireless Research Centre at UC Berkeley wanted to rethink the way wireless radios were being miniaturised. While the conventional way involved shrinking the size of components, the team thought of miniaturising all the electronics in a wireless radio. The antenna on the chip is one-tenth the size of a standard Wi-Fi antenna and operates at 24 billion cycles per second. Other components of the wireless chip are a receiving antenna which traps power from electromagnetic waves, a transmitting antenna that broadcast replies and is capable of relaying signals and a central processor to handle all the functions.

Jarvis - AI Based Operating System
Jarvis is a revolutionizing technology that can change the face of the Earth. At present all digital solutions found in the market, are designed to do a particular set of tasks. However, in case of Jarvis it will adapt itself according to its user. It can access the technical surrounding of its user and learns from his/her daily habits and then make necessary decisions in users absence. We therefore term it as AN ENVIRONMENT capable of THINKING and taking required INDEPENDENT decisions.Jarvis is not a Standardized System which is common for all the users, but it is a completely different system meant for PERSONALIZES needs. It works accordingly for each individual user for his/her OWN requirement.
The conventional way of designing an Operating System, Jarvis has a completely different architecture that is being introduced for the very first time. The architecture has been designed in such a fashion that Jarvis will be able to adapt itself according to the user without changing anything in the code.
The real power of Jarvis lies in its Robust Architecture. It is a multilayered system with abstract layers at each level. Each level is designed to do a specific task. The user will have the capability to controlling his/her operating system. For example: At present you can control your home/office automation system remotely through your smart phones. In the traditional operating systems, each time you require a task to be done, new information has to be fed. However, with Jarvis this is not required. Once the required information is fed, the user may forget about it, but Jarvis won’t.
As per the habit of the user Jarvis will complete the required task without asking for new set of instructions from its user.

MIT professor is turning robots into ideal colleagues for humans
“In factories there are usually physical barriers between people and robots. Originally, this was for safety—industrial robots were unwieldy and unyielding. Although robots are increasingly designed to safely share human workspaces, even in these settings, people do one set of jobs and robots do another.
“Imagine if robots could be truly collaborative partners, able to anticipate and adapt to the needs of their human teammates. Such robots could greatly extend productivity. That possibility is really exciting to me.
“Human interaction isn’t part of the traditional curriculum for training roboticists. Our field is always pushing to make our systems more autonomous, and have richer capabilities and intelligence, but in that push we tend to look past the fact that these systems are, and always will be, working in human contexts.
“My lab is now focused on how to create robots that make flexible plans and reconsider their best next action based on changing conditions. It’s a challenging problem, because it’s so hard to model people—to know exactly what they’ll do and when. You also have a computational challenge, because the robot needs to reason on all these possible futures so quickly (the way humans naturally do so well). And you need to make the robot interact in a way that a person will accept. But experiments show that when people work with the adaptive robots we have designed, they can complete their task faster, with less idle time, and they even feel safer and more comfortable.
“The interesting thing about this is that there’s evidence to suggest the techniques can translate to better human-machine teamwork in almost any setting—from manufacturing to operating rooms to military applications. I think the insights will apply very broadly. After all, good teamwork is good teamwork.”
